Selecting the Right Carpet Pad
When selecting carpet, people spend more time on the choice of flooring, while making quick decisions regarding the padding. A carpeting pad or cushion is what is installed underneath the flooring and plays an important role in the durability and longevity of the floor. A popular myth is that the more expensive the padding, the more expensive the carpeting should be, and vice versa. This is not the case however, and instead, padding and carpeting should complement one another.
People often assume that the role of padding is to create additional comfort when walking. With this in mind, it's often the softer padding that is chosen because of its spongy feel. Yet the real task of padding is to absorb the impact that comes from foot traffic. If the padding didn't take in this impact, the carpeting would do so instead, causing premature wear. In addition, the carpeting would be subject to breaking down, stretching out the backing and causing the layers to come apart.
Not only are people quick to choose a padding that is too soft, but also one that is too thick. A thicker padding has the same idea in mind; it's softer, so it must be better. Yet just like the softer pads, thick ones will cause the carpeting to take the burden. These pads cause problems with the overall height of the carpeting and can cause it to come loose on the tack strip. The best selection for padding is one that is less comfortable on the feet and thin enough that it will hold the carpeting on the tack strip. It will be rated in density, which is the performance of the padding.
Another reason why many homeowners choose the wrong padding is because flooring companies often carry only one or two selections. They may even name these cushions "good" and "better", so you feel as if there's no wrong decision. The reason for this is that padding is purchased in bulk quantities and companies choose to carry one selection to reduce cost. Ask questions about the padding and most importantly, request samples. If you don't find quality padding, check with the retailer to see if they can order you a superior cushion.
To show the retailer you can't be fooled by lesser quality padding, know your materials. Urethane foam is a good buy if you purchase padding with the proper density. It's available in a variety of densities and thicknesses, so it's important to choose a worthy product. Bonded urethane is another option and serves as one of the most popular padding types today. It is also measured in density and thickness and is made from reclaimed urethane foam. It is important to note that bonded urethane products may contain butylated hydroxyl toluene or Bht.
This additive is used during the manufacturing process in order to avoid the risk of fire. However, it can cause the carpet to turn yellow, which is why it's necessary to ask the retailer if the padding contains Bht.
Waffle rubber padding is another option in today's homes and has been used for decades. With improved technological advancements in material and production methods, waffle padding has become more durable. However, it's still favorable to find the thickest waffle material possible to ensure quality cushioning. A final option is flat rubber, which is extremely pricey and difficult to find through retailers. If budget allows, this is a first-rate choice for padding, as it keeps carpeting looking new and won't need to be replaced with each installation.
A final consideration of padding is whether you should choose a pad with a double moisture barrier. On one hand, these pads are very efficient at preventing moisture from seeping into the carpet. They allow additional time for spills to be cleaned up, which is an advantage in homes with kids and pets. On the other hand, these pads can also seep up moisture from cracks in the foundation. This can cause mold and mildew to form underneath the carpeting. Having a moisture barrier also costs additional money and isn't always necessary.
When choosing quality padding, you can rest assured that your flooring will continue looking its best and be protected against some of the most common pitfalls of carpeting, such as buckling, premature wear and wrinkling. Giving careful considerations to this part of your flooring project will leave you pleased for years to come.
