How to Determine Your Individual Colouring
This can be done by observing the colouring of a bare face in a large mirror, under natural daylight with hair pulled back completely off your face.
After comparing the skin colouring to each one of these elements, you will get a better understanding of the methods used when determining your individual colouring. Once your skin-tone has been analysed, comparing the observations to the general guideline below will help determine which colours are most appropriate (for you to wear and use) for your specific skin-tone.
LIGHT COLOURING
- This skin-tone has a fair complexion with lightly coloured hair
- Overall features are light and fair
- Generally blonde hair blue-eyed with little contrast between different features
- Most commonly blue eyes, but can also be green, grey or light hazel in colour
- Can wear most colours, but limit wearing darker tones
- This type of colouring looks best in clear colours with light to medium tones
- Best neutrals are light greys, beiges and lighter varieties of navy.
BRIGHT COLOURING
- Usually medium to dark coloured hair; identified by a high contrast between hair, eyes and skin colour
- Celtic colouring in origin; commonly seen in light to medium skin-tones
- Generally has a pink undertone that's prone to sunburn
- Needs to create a contrast by wearing clear, bright colours in medium tones
- Clear primary reds, pinks, greens and blues are the best colours. Avoid yellow and orange (including peach) and pale, light colours
- Best neutral colours; black, navy, charcoal grey and brown.
DEEP COLOURING
- Olive to dark skin and dark hair
- Most common group in the world
- Hair is usually dark, eyes are commonly brown (may be dark green or dark blue)
- Latin and Asian races and races that have darker hair fall into this category (has strong colouring and needs to wear strong colours to complement it)
- Can wear most colours, but they should have depth and intensity in medium to dark tones, and be pure and vibrant
- Rich deep colours complement this skin-tone the best like: red wine, aubergine and burnt orange. Best neutrals include chocolate brown, charcoal grey, French navy, and black.
WARM COLOURING
- This group is characterized by a high content of carotene pigment which results in a rich, warm colouring with auburn or red hair
- Eye colour is usually brown, hazel, blue or green
- Skin-tone can be pale or golden-beige with a tendency towards freckles
- Most people with this type of colouring look best in rich, warm colours that have a strong golden tone
- Best colours are rust, warm red, peach, yellow and various tones of browns
- Mossy greens and turquoise blues can also look striking, however warmer colours work the best with this skin colouring
- Best neutral colours are brown, camel and navy. Black can look harsh and should not be worn in large quantities.
MUTED COLOURING
- Usually light coloured hair with darker eyes
- Eyes might be dark green, dark blue or brown; hair is usually blonde to light brown
- More women are dying their hair lighter, so this group is more common now than it once was
- Best colours are muted tones, (pure colours which are softened and with blended soft tones of greys)
- Pastels like dusky pink, sage green and various tones of grey-blue are appropriate
- Best neutral colours are soft greys and light stone colours.
COOL COLOURING
- This colouring is very common and often seen in mature people who've developed grey hair
- Other common hair colours include soft, ash brown colours; but grey is the most common
- Eyes are generally paler, and skin-tone is usually light with a blue or pink undertone
- Most people from this group look best in cool colours such as; greens blues and purples
- Blue-red can be worn, but orange-red (including warm colours such as yellow, peach, and terracotta) do not work well with this colouring and should be avoided
- Best neutrals are greys, navy and black.
