Sugary drinks may raise gout risk in older women
Women who drink one or more servings of sugary drinks or orange juice a day may be increasing their risk for developing gout, a new study suggests.
Still, the increased risk is thought to be modest because of women's overall low rate of gout.
Gout is a type of arthritis that occurs when uric acid crystals form in the joints, such as the big toe and the ankle, causing intense pain and swelling. While it's thought that genetics play a role in one's gout risk, a diet high in meats, seafood and alcohol, as well as obesity, are thought to raise the risk.
Women rarely develop the condition because female hormones are thought to protect them, but the risk of gout increases after menopause. With more women living longer, the prevalence of gout in older women is increasing, the researchers note.
For the study, presented this week at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting in Atlanta, researchers found that women who drink a lot of sugar-sweetened soft drinks and orange juice can increase serum uric acid levels and, thus, their risk of gout.
The new research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, used data from the long-running Nurses' Health Study.
The researchers, led by said Dr. Hyon K. Choi, of Boston University School of Medicine, looked at data on almost 79,000 predominately white women with no history of gout. All the women provided information on their beverage and fructose intake through food questionnaires.
During 22 years of follow-up, the researchers documented 778 newly diagnosed cases of gout. They found that those women who drank sugar-sweetened soft drinks had an increased risk of gout.
Compared to those who drank less than one serving per month, women who consumed one serving per day had a 74 per cent increased risk of gout. Those who drank two or more servings per day had a 2.4 times higher risk.
Diet soft drinks were not associated with the risk of gout.
Orange juice intake was also associated with risk of gout. Compared with women who consumed less than a glass (6 oz.) of orange juice per month, women who consumed 1 serving per day had a 41 per cent higher risk of gout, and there was a 2.4 times higher risk with 2 or more servings per day. Total fruit intake did not appear to be linked with an increased risk of gout.
Although the relative risks of gout associated with fructose-rich beverages among women were substantial, the absolute risk differences were modest, because of the low incidence rate of gout among women.
Nevertheless, the researchers say their findings have practical implications for the prevention of gout in women. They say doctors and post-menopausal women should be aware of the potential effect of these beverages on the risk of gout.
