Thick Leather Motorcycle Vests Vs. Thin, A No Brainer
Leather motorcycle vests are purchased for a reason and it that reason could be a number of things including the rider simply wants to be provided with an extra layer of warmth, or they are looking to add an extra layer of protection for their torso for times when they don't where a motorcycle jacket. The question of thickness almost always comes into play when considering making the purchase of a new leather vest and it's important to understand the reasoning behind choosing the thicker leather material.
First off, a thicker leather material will be able to hold heat better than a thinner material so if you're looking to be able to provide more warmth on cool rides, then the thicker leather is going to be important. How thick are we talking? We'll you want a leather that is at least 1.2mm thick. Any less than that and you start to get into the thinner materials that won't be able to stand up to the test as well. So the thicker material is going to be able to hold in your heat the best because it is harder for any outside cool air to penetrate this material. An even better strategy would be to pair up your leather motorcycle vest with a leather motorcycle jacket, but if it's to warm for a jacket, then this would be out of the question.
Another reason that the thicker leather material is going to be more beneficial to you is that it is more structurally sound than thinner material so it is going to be able to hold up better if you happen to fall of your bike and skid on the road or other surface. The thinner material would most likely shred to pieces in no time, whereas the thicker leather motorcycle vest will not fall apart as easily and may shred apart at all. Of course this depends on the severity of the skid and the surface that you happen to land on. Unfortunately, the leather cannot completely prevent you from being injured, it can only help reduce the severity of your injuries.
So these two points help reinforce the fact that the thicker leather material is definitely more beneficial than having a thin leather motorcycle vest. If you're out shopping for a leather vest, do yourself a favor and don't settle for the cheaper version and consider spending a little more money on something that will last much longer and will work out a lot better for you in the long run.
