Age factor in Korea 2
I am from the East and its culture is my nature. I feel most comfortable with Asian culture. I'm also someone who lived most of his life in the West, and hence posses a fairly good understanding on Western culture. Especially in Vancouver where multitudes of ethnicity are densely concentrated, I had the chance to see many different cultures on a daily basis. And here's my conclusion: I have yet found to date a culture in which ‘age' plays more integral part than it does in Korea.
In principle, it's very simple: the older gets more respect than the younger. It might not come as a surprise because it is generally true in most other cultures, as well. A college boy should be more careful when talking to his parents than he does to his friends. A 4th grader should be more polite to her teacher than the way she behaves to her brother. It's a common sense and we all know it. True, when it comes to polite behaviour before older people, younger generation today is becoming more and more casual to the point quite unimaginable twenty years ago. However, this principle is still alive and it's highly valued in most cultures. So what's so different about this in Korea, you say?
Try to picture following cases:
- A 10th grade girl runs into a 11th grad girl in the corridor. As soon as their eyes met one another's, the younger girl bows her head and in response the older girl nods back.
- A 25 year old college boy is handing over a book to a 21 year old classmate. The older one is holding the book with a single hand while the younger one receives it with both hands (sign of extra courtesy) with visible gratitude.
Now, as I said above, politeness required of a kid to an adult is a no brainer even in the West. But what about those two cases I mentioned above? If you're surprised already, you will be even more when you grab and ask any Korean, and find such scenarios are such a matter-of-course in Korea. I'm not kidding.
