The Summer TV Lineup - Finding the Best New Shows
The Summer TV Season is often a mix of promising shows, fillers, and experiments. Many summer tv shows hold promise, others have a large and loyal followings already, and still others are just there to fill the space. All of the shows receive some degree of promotion from the networks, so understanding the summer lineup in order to find the true gems is important.
Below is a link to our site which previews some of the specific shows coming out this summer. But there are ways for you to also do this homework and understand which summer tv show might be worth tuning in. It starts with understanding why a new summer tv show was scheduled for this less promising season, as follows:
1. Reality TV shows are so cheap and easy to make, and can fill a full hour or even 90 minutes. They can be entertaining even if there was little set up and no rehearsal. These summer tv reality shows can be fun and interesting. Don't get too attached to the characters because you may never see them again.
2. Shows that were excellent candidates for the strong spring season, are not quite ready for the vital fall season, and experienced delays in the spring. Maybe a lead actor was pregnant, or someone got hurt – instead of putting the show off until next spring, it debuts in the summer lineup.
3. TV shows that have a strong following already might be shown in the summer. This way they do not compete against stronger line-ups so they can retain that following.
4. Often a TV series that did not do well in a previous fall or spring but was critically acclaimed or is well liked by the network executives will get another chance in the summer. This is particularly true when the show has episodes already filmed (or "in the can").
5. Brand new ideas – especially with regard to game shows and news magazines often debut in the summer. When a network has no idea how a new and innovative show will perform, it might be tested in short release (just a few episodes) in the summer.
The summer lineup is underrated and unfairly dismissed by many. Understanding the reasons that shows are being shown in the Summer TV lineup can help you find some entertaining and promising new shows, and can help effectively bridge the time until your favorite shows return in the fall!
