How To Wear Double Denim
One fashion trend that's certainly grabbing a lot of attention this season is "double denim" – a trend that calls denim to be worn as both a top and a bottom.
It's been seen on the catwalk, on countless celebs - including Kanye West, Heidi Klum, and Zac Efron - and it's already leaking out as the fashion on the streets. Admittedly, while many love the trend, countless others don't. After all, if there's one era this trend is reminiscent of, it's the 80s – and we all know that while some people love anything that has to do with the 80s, others would rather forget the fashion sense of the decade altogether.
Still, while the double denim trend has the potential to go terribly wrong, it also has the potential to look amazing. The trick is simply in knowing how to wear denim on denim, and thus, how to use the trend to your advantage.
The first "rule" of wearing double denim is to avoid wearing matching denim shades which will, interestingly enough, make your outfit clash. Instead, wear two completely different shades of denim – for example, black or very dark blue denim trousers, along with a light blue denim button up shirt or denim jacket. You can, of course, always switch the shades of denim and wear very dark on top and light on bottom; just ensure there is some contrast.
If you really want to match in some way on top and bottom, try wearing denim trousers and a denim vest to match – but make sure the shirt underneath the vest contrasts the denim completely. As for any matching double denim you've seen on the runways, just remember that some people – including runway models – might be able to pull the look off; but head to toe matching denim won't be too flattering on most people.
Another way to wear double denim is to accessorise in order to "break up" the denim look. For instance, add a thick leather belt to your denim outfit, which will break up the colours and textures of the denim and avoid making you look like you're wearing a denim jumpsuit. It's also smart to layer with your denim, throwing in non-denim items like graphic t-shirts or camisoles.
Remember, the double denim trend isn't a free pass to go overboard with denim – so don't dive into the "triple denim" look unless the third piece of denim is subtle, like an accessory.
The great thing about bringing the double denim look back after so many years is that now, there are many more shades and textures of denim to work with – so you can really make the look work for you. So keep the style in mind next time you're out shopping for womens jeans, and take advantage of the trend before it goes into hiding once again.
